Toshiba laptops have been around for over twenty years now and over that period of time they have built up a reputation as being reliable high-quality products.
Better still is the fact that increased competition, from direct-to-order computer companies such as Dell, have forced them to keep their prices low. Thus, there is now a whole range of cheap laptop options available, among Toshiba’s five main notebook product lines.
Their two cheapest product lines are the Satellite and Tecra, with the Satellite being by far the more common and on average cheaper of the two. The main difference between the two lines has to do with their focus. The Satellite series of Toshiba notebooks is aimed at the home as well as student markets. As a result they tend to have features and software that caters to those groups. The Tecra series of laptops, on the other hand, are more focused towards business users, and as a result are more lightweight and feature more business oriented software. Thus, for most people one of these two lines should prove more than sufficient.
Toshiba’s other three product lines are aimed more at certain niche markets. Their Qosmio line is designed to be a portable entertainment system, although in reality it is only really useful to people who need high-end graphic capabilities such as serious gamers. The Portégé line of laptops on the other hand is designed for ultra-portability and are extremely light-weight, with some of them offering advanced security features like fingerprint identification. Finally, if a Portégé laptop isn’t light enough for you, Toshiba also offers the libretto line of mini-notebooks, which start at just two pounds in weight. However, while all three of these lines offer cool and impressive features, their average prices are more than double those of the Satellite and Tecra lines.
There are many places on the Internet where you can buy Toshiba notebooks. However, where you go to look for one will depend on what condition you want to get it in. Buying new is often the easiest way, although it is also the most expensive. On the other hand, there are a few things to be aware of if you want to buy a refurbished or used one.
The Best And Cheapest Refurbished Toshiba Laptops
Many people opt to buy refurbished Toshiba laptops over new ones simply because they are cheaper. They often come with the exact same features as newer models;
yet can be hundreds of dollars less. Thus, a refurbished Toshiba notebook can be a good alternative to buying new, as long as you keep a few things in mind.
Refurbished laptops from Toshiba, like other refurbished computers, are a mixture between new and used computer. This is why they are, on average, cheaper than new models but more expensive than used ones. The term refurbished refers to the process of fixing of minor cosmetic blemishes with the case or screen of a laptop and/or correcting other minor problems. They are then tested and certified to ensure that they work properly.
As an additional guarantee, all refurbished Toshiba notebooks, from sites we recommend, come with some form of additional warranty. These on average tend to last for 30 to 90 days, so just check to make sure you are getting the length you want. While, this is shorter than those given on new models, it is better than used models, which often don’t come with any warranty. Think of refurbished laptops as a middle road between higher priced new models and cheaper used ones.
Finally, there is one more important thing to watch out for before buying a refurbished Toshiba laptop. While most of them can be used right out of the box, some can’t. This is a result of the fact that some refurbished notebooks, don’t come with any operating system installed. While, this can save you money on the laptop itself, it can mean more money spent later on. So, just be sure to check to make sure what you are getting. That also goes for making sure it has everything else you want too! For more information about what to look for in a refurbished notebook computer please read our Buyer’s Guide.
The Cheapest Used Toshiba Laptops
There are no shortage of websites selling used Toshiba notebooks, given that Toshiba has been selling laptops for over twenty years. However, finding them cheap is a bit more difficult. Overall, the best and by far the cheapest place to find them are on auction websites.
Nevertheless, before you buy any used laptop, especially one from an auction site, there are a few things you should take into account.
Unlike new or refurbished Toshiba laptops, used ones often come with only a very limited warranty or none at all. However, that being said, the price of used laptops from Toshiba can be hundreds of dollars less than even the cheapest refurbished model. Thus, the good news is that while buying from online auctions sites like Ebay, is and will remain, slightly less certain than buying from the manufacturer or a store, there are still ways of insuring that you get what you pay for.
The best way to make sure that you are buying from someone reputable, on an auction site, is to check the seller’s reputation rating. Two things to watch out for are a lack of sales experience and a high degree of negative feedback. I tend to look for sellers who have sold at least a couple of hundred items before with a 99% or higher approval rating. Also, it can be very helpful to read people’s actual comments to get a feel for the seller’s reputation. The two biggest and most useful auction sites for used Toshiba notebooks are eBay and Overstock.com. Moreover, both websites are increasingly featuring sellers who are willing to give some form of warranty.
While the two sites auction sites above unquestionably have the best deals around, many people feel more comfortable buying with more certainty. If this is how you feel then you may want to consider one of the following two options. First, you may want to consider visiting the Ubid auction website. Ubid sells used notebooks from Toshiba in an auction format, just like Ebay and Overstock.com, but unlike the other two they guarantee you get what you pay for, as well as offering longer-term warranties. The only really negative thing about Ubid is that it has a smaller selection and prices tend to be a little higher than at the other two auction sites, although it still has many great deals.
Finally, there is one more thing to consider before buying second Toshiba notebooks. Make sure that everything you need is included with your laptop. Occasionally, people sell a used Toshiba laptop, without any sort of operating system and this could significantly add to the cost of that cheap laptop. Also, don’t jump at the first deal you see since it is usually worth it to look at each and every auction site to find exactly what you are looking for.
